A woman sitting in the front passenger seat of a vehicle was the first of five people to be shot during a string of non-fatal, daytime shootings that took place across the borough within a 12-hour duration.

Police were first called to 3585 Jerome Avenue at East 215th Street in Norwood at 7:11 a.m. on Thursday, June 16. Officials say the unidentified 26-year-old female victim was shot in the leg as she sat in a parked vehicle near Van Cortlandt Park. She was rushed to Montefiore Hospital where she was listed in “stable” condition. Police reported no arrests in the case but were looking for the gunman who, according to police sources, was described as a male with a dark complexion.

At 12:15 p.m., officers in the 40th precinct were called to Mill Brook Houses, located at 350 East 137th Street in the Mott Haven section of the borough, where a 20-year-old man had been shot in the leg. The victim was transported to Lincoln Hospital where he was listed in stable condition. Police had no arrests in the case, and said the investigation remains ongoing.

A third shooting victim was reported at 2 p.m. outside of The Justice Sonia Sotomayor Houses and Community Center housing project, located at 1725 Bruckner Boulevard in the Soundview section of the borough. Upon arrival, officers from the 43rd precinct and Public Service Area 8, a command within the NYPD’s Housing division, discovered a 21-year-old victim with a gunshot wound to the arm. Police reported that Dnique Coleman, 23, of nearby Watson Avenue was arrested and charged with assault in connection with the shooting.

Officers at the 44th Precinct were called at 5:43 p.m. in response to a person who, it was reported, had been shot inside 3125 Park Avenue in Concourse Village. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 54-year-old man who reported that he had been shot in the leg as he exited the building’s elevator. The unidentified victim was removed by EMS to Lincoln Hospital where he was listed as stable. Police reported no arrests in connection with the incident nor any description of the perpetrator.

Police reported a fifth shooting at 7 p.m. when officers from the 40th precinct were called to 644 Wales Avenue in the Woodstock section of the South Bronx. A 28-year-old man had been shot multiple times in the left leg outside the location. The victim was rushed to Lincoln Hospital, where he too was listed to be in stable condition.

The NYPD later released a surveillance photo on social media of the two suspects in connection with the Woodstock shooting, one driving a moped and a passenger on the backseat who was seen firing a handgun at the victim. Police officials said after the shooting, the suspects fled eastbound on East 152nd Street.

The unprecedented string of daytime shootings follows an overnight shooting spree back on April 12, where four separate shootings across The Bronx during a 3-hour period left three people dead and eight others wounded.

A person arrested and charged with a crime is deemed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law. The NYPD urges anyone with information on any of these incidents to contact the Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1 (800) 577-TIPS. All calls are confidential.

You got the wrong Norwood for local news. Our Norwood is on the New York/Canada border.

      Hi Larry,

Indeed, Norwood News is a Bronx-based publication. You need to check out your own local paper in your own locality.

      Thanks,
