A 64-year-old woman from Kingsbridge Heights has died after being hit by a vehicle on the Major Deegan Expressway, police said.
An NYPD spokesperson said that on Wednesday, May 10, at around 7.40 p.m., police responded to a 911 call regarding a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian who had been struck on the northbound Major Deegan Expressway at the exit area to North Mosholu Parkway [in Van Cortlandt Park].
“Upon arrival, officers observed a 64-year-old female, unconscious and unresponsive, lying on the roadway,” the spokesperson said. “EMS responded to the location and transported the aided female to St. Barnabas Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.”
Police said that further investigation by the NYPD Highway District Collision Investigation Squad found that the woman had allegedly entered the northbound lanes of the Major Deegan Expressway near exit 12, the exit for northbound Mosholu Parkway, and was first struck in the center lane by the passenger side mirror of a 2015 Mercedes Benz C300, driven by a 20-year-old man.
“This action caused the pedestrian to fall to the roadway,” the spokesperson said. Police added, that woman was then run over by a second vehicle, a 2014 Toyota Camry, driven by a 19-year-old man, who was also traveling northbound in the center lane of the expressway. “Both vehicles remained at the scene,” police said, adding that neither driver was injured. There are no arrests, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The victim has been identified as Clemencia Cabrera from the Kingsbridge Heights section of The Bronx.
