A livery taxi driver was wounded as he sat behind the wheel of his cab by an unknown assailant on Friday in the Westchester Square section of the Bronx. The driver reportedly hit the gas to escape the gunman, causing his vehicle to plow into a parked car.
An unnamed detective at police headquarters told Norwood News late Friday night that the shooting was reported along Zerega Avenue, between Lyon and Westchester Avenues at 6:15 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28.
The detective said, “There was a shooting at the location. A male was shot in the leg while inside his vehicle.” He added, “He’s not being very forthcoming with more information, other than that. We got called and he went to an area hospital.” The unidentified victim was expected to survive the incident.
The NYPD detective continued, “It looks like either somebody on foot, or in a car, approached him and pulled out a firearm and shot him and then the driver / victim took off in his car,” adding that the livery taxi later plowed into the back of a parked car on the quiet, tee-lined street.
The detective was asked about a third impacted vehicle, a second, black SUV, that was further down the block on Westchester Avenue. That vehicle had damage to its rear and police officers were seen examining it at the scene. However, the detective replied that there was only one [parked] vehicle impacted.
Asked if robbery was the motive of the shooting, the source said it was “too much speculation” at this time. Police continue to investigate to the incident.
