Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced on Wednesday, April 5, that a Bronx man has been charged with manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide in the death of his 15-year-old stepson, as reported.
In the context of the announcement, Clark said, “The defendant allegedly got into a dispute with his stepson, and restrained him by grabbing his neck, causing a lack of oxygen which led to the boy’s death. It is horrific that his life was taken at such a young age.” She said the defendant, Tyresse Minter, 28, was arraigned on Wednesday on charges of second-degree manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide before Bronx Supreme Court Justice Naita Semaj-Williams. The court heard that the people asked that Minter be remanded following his arraignment, but he was released and is due back in court on June 20.
According to the investigation, on January 23, Minter, who had been released from prison a month earlier and was on parole, allegedly got into a dispute with his 15-year-old stepson, Corde Scott, in their home on Doris Street in the Parkchester area (Westchester Square). Minter allegedly put Corde in a neck hold to restrain him, causing his neck to be compressed and cutting off his oxygen supply.
The prosecution said Minter then allegedly wrapped his legs around the boy to secure him. The boy lost consciousness and died at the scene. Minter did not call 911 to report the victim’s death until 20 minutes after the restraint.
The case is being prosecuted by Deputy Chief Alexandra Militano and Assistant District Attorney Christopher Conway of the Child Abuse/Sex Crimes Bureau, with the assistance of Assistant District Attorney Astrid Borgstedt, trial counsel of the Child Abuse/Sex Crimes Bureau, under the supervision of Mimi Mairs, chief of the Child Abuse/Sex Crimes Bureau, and under the overall supervision of Adrienne Giunta, deputy chief of the Special Victims Division and Joseph Muroff, chief of the Special Victims Division.
Clark thanked homicide advocate, Ana Pimentel, of the Crime Victims’ Assistance Bureau and trial preparation assistant, Ti-Aana Hylton, for their assistance. She also thanked Detective Robert Cintron of the Bronx Homicide Task Force, Detectives Paula Aguero and Airam Cruz-Sheppard of the 45th Precinct Detective Squad for their work on the case, and Brenda Guzman of the nonprofit, Safe Horizon, which supports victims of domestic violence, for her support.
A person arrested and charged with a crime is deemed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.
