Check out the following events taking place across the Bronx over this Juneteenth and Father’s Day holiday weekend.

Seton Falls Park Forest Restoration 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Marolla Place and Boller Avenue, Seton Falls Park, Bronx

Upper River Paddle 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Shoelace Park, Bronx Park, Bronx

Intermediate Canoeing 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Orchard Beach Parking Lot, Pelham Bay Park, Bronx

Bronx Sole Celebrating Juneteenth 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Franz Sigel Park, Bronx

The 18th Annual Hunts Point Fish Parade & Summer Festival 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Hunts Point Riverside Park

Juneteenth NYC presented by SCAN Harbor 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Community Rowing and Birding 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Hunts Point Riverside Park

Arts, Culture & Fun: Dancing in the Streets 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Van Cortlandt House Museum & others present a special Juneteenth event, live-streamed from from 11 a.m. In gratitude for the sacrifice of the African Ancestors who built what is now Van Cortlandt Park, the African Burial Ground in the park will be consecrated.

Graduation cookout to celebrate Juneteenth.

The proceedings will be hosted by cultural consultant, Peggy King Jorde, and the libation ceremony by chief Baba Neil Clarke. There will be live music by Bronx Arts Ensemble. There will also be traditional negro spirituals by soloist Beverly Fleming-Camejo, remarks by artist and historian, Kamau Ware, Black Gotham Experience and a benediction by Rev. Dr. Hermon L. Darden, senior pastor, St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church. The ceremony will be live-streamed on Facebook Live.

This program is presented respectfully by Van Cortlandt Park Alliance, Van Cortlandt House Museum, Kingsbridge Historical Society, and the by the “Enslaved People Project Task Force Steering Committee with New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. The program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in Partnership with the City Council. Attendees include Congressman Jamaal Bowman, Congressman Adriano Espaillat, Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, and Council Eric Dinowitz.

Make Music New York (MMNY) is back! Since 2007, public parks in NYC have come alive with music across genres, generations and skill levels. After a year off thanks to COVID-19, the festival returns to a park near you on Monday, June 21. Google MMNY to find a spot near you and go support local musicians!

 

If you happen to be in the NW Bronx, several acts that have traditionally played at Fort Independence Park for MMNY, and some other players who were part of the early-pandemic online open mic called Home Remedy, will be playing there beginning at 5 p.m. Please join us and please use the attached poster to spread the word!

Van Cortlandt Park Alliance advise that Cheyney McKnight of Not Your Momma’s History recently lead two “Let’s Talk About Slavery in Van Cortlandt Park” tours and will be leading a third one, that is at capacity, later this month. You can still join on Tuesday June 22nd at 6:30pm for a virtual presentation where Ms. Knight will provide an overview of the history of slavery and share information about locations built by those enslaved on the land we know now as Van Cortlandt Park. Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
