A 64-year-old male pedestrian from Wakefield has died after he was struck during a hit & run incident in Wakefield on Monday, police said.
An NYPD spokesperson said that on Monday, Sept. 23, at around 12.37 p.m., police responded to a 911 call regarding a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian who was struck at the intersection of East 229th Street and Bronxwood Avenue. Upon arrival, officers observed a 64-year-old male, unconscious and unresponsive, with trauma about the head and body.
Police said further investigation by the NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad determined the pedestrian was attempting to cross over Bronxwood Avenue within the marked crosswalk with the signal from the northeast to the northwest corner of East 229th Street. At that moment, they said he was struck by a 2016 Chevy Silverado (pick-up-tow-truck) traveling eastbound on East 229th Street at the intersection of Bronxwood Avenue, making a left turn onto northbound Bronxwood Avenue with a steady green light.
They said the driver of the vehicle did not remain at the scene, there are no arrests, and the investigation remains ongoing. The deceased has been identified as SM Akhtaruzzaman, a 64-year-old man from Wakefield.
With collision investigations, the NYPD handles all criminal aspects of the investigation, while NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) reviews the street design at the locations of such crashes.
