The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is reminding veterans of the number to call to reach the veterans crisis helpline. The number to dial is 988, then press 1. The service offered helps veterans and their loved ones reach crisis support quickly and efficiently.
Signed into law in 2020, the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act authorized 988 as the new three-digit number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
The new, shorter number addresses the need for ease of access and clarity in times of crisis. Veterans can use this new option to reach the Veterans Crisis Line by dialing 988 and pressing 1.
Veterans will still be able to call 1-800-273-8255 and Press 1, chat at VeteransCrisisLine.net/Chat, and text 838255 to reach caring, qualified responders.
