The NYPD have made an arrest following a hit & run incident in Wakefield that left a 49-year-old man with critical injuries.
It was reported to police that on Friday, April 22, at 8.15 a.m., the person arrested allegedly stole a white 2002 Mitsubishi flatbed truck that had been parked in front of a lumber yard located at 4527 White Plains Road.
At 8.17 a.m., as the vehicle was traveling northbound on White Plains Road, it struck a 49-year-old man who had been standing beside his vehicle, a grey Chevy Silverado pick-up truck.
The driver of the Mitsubishi did not remain at the scene and continued northbound on White Plains Road. The victim, who suffered severe body trauma, lacerations and broken bones was transported by EMS to Jacobi Medical Center where he is in critical but stable condition.
According to police, the Chevy vehicle sustained damage along the length of the driver’s side. At 4.13 p.m., the driver of the Mitsubishi hit a utility pole in the vicinity of East 235th Street and White Plains Road also in Wakefield. He left the vehicle and fled the scene on foot in a southbound direction along White Plains Road.
At 5 p.m., officers responding to a 911 call regarding a collision discovered and recovered the Mitsubishi vehicle. The suspect is described as being in his late 50s or 60s, is bald, and is Black.
A photo and video of the incident are attached. The photo shows the man on Friday, April 22, at about 4.15 p.m. walking southbound on White Plains Road towards East 234th Street. The video contains two clips of the collision with the pedestrian: the first shows the contact between the victim and the Mitsubishi, and the second ends right before the moment of impact.
On Friday, Aug. 12, police said Carl Jenkins, 58, of East 30th Street in Manhattan was arrested. He was charged on Thursday, Aug. 11, in the 47th Precinct with grand larceny, leaving the scene of an accident causing serious injury and vehicular assault.
A person arrested and charged with a crime is deemed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.
