Freedomland Talk
Located in The Bronx, Freedomland U.S.A. was celebrated as the “Disneyland of the East.” While it survived only five seasons (1960-1964), the park continues to generate fond memories among boomers who enjoyed its American, history-themed attractions. Many younger NYC residents are surprised to learn of such a large scale and well-appointed theme park that existed in The Bronx.
Freedomland was built over marshland in the east Bronx where Co-op City and a shopping mall now stand. Unfortunately for the park, senior local politicians, city planners and construction unions at the time considered the park a “placeholder” until property variances permitted development on the marshland.
