UPDATE NWS Issues Thunderstorm & Flooding Warning on Thursday, June 2, until 5.45 p.m.

The New York City office of the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Bronx county and nearby regions on Sunday, May 22, until 4:15 p.m.

 

“A severe thunderstorm was located over Oradell, or over Paramus, moving southeast at 25 mph,” NWS officials said. “Wind gusts of 60 mph are expected,” according to the agency’s radar. Officials said to expect damage to trees and power lines.

“This severe thunderstorm will be near Bergenfield and Norwood around 3.50 p.m., Fort Lee and Englewood around 4 p.m., Yonkers, Harlem and Riverdale around 4.05 p.m., Mott Haven, East Tremont and Bronxville around 4.10 p.m., New Rochelle, Co-op City and City Island around 4.15 p.m.,” officials said.

They said there is a threat of hail with maximum hail size of under 0.75 inches.

Residents are instructed as follows: “For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. Torrential rainfall is occurring with this storm, and may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.”

 

NWS later issued a flood advisory, which is in effect until 5.45 p.m., due to excessive rainfall in southeast New York, including in The Bronx, New York (Manhattan), Queens and Westchester.

“Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas is expected. Officials added, “At 4.17 p.m. EDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. Minor flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the advisory area. Some locations that will experience flooding include Yonkers, New Rochelle, Flushing, Mott Haven, East Tremont, Throggs Neck Bridge, LaGuardia Airport, RFK Bridge, Midtown
Manhattan, Harlem, Jackson Heights, Astoria, Greenwich, Riverdale, Bayside, Co-op City, Whitestone, Scarsdale, Bronxville and City Island.” Visit: http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood for tips on how to stay safe.

NWS officials added, “Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads.”
