Last October, the New York City Police Department asked for the public’s assistance in identifying the man seen in the attached surveillance video and photo in connection with an assault that occurred in the 42nd precinct.
It was reported to police that on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2020 at approximately 5.30 p.m., in front of 960 Tinton Avenue, located between Forest Houses and William McKinley Houses, a 30-year-old male victim was approached by an unknown individual who displayed a black firearm and shot the victim in the torso before fleeing the scene on foot in an unknown direction. EMS responded to the location and transported the victim to NYC Health and Hospitals/Lincoln, where he remained listed in critical condition.
The suspect was described as male, 20 to 30 years old, had a thin build, a full beard and a dark complexion. He was last seen wearing a black and red baseball cap, a white hooded sweatshirt with a Nike logo on the front section, blue jeans and multi-colored sneakers.
The attached surveillance video and photo, taken before and during the incident, were circulated by police at the time.
Police confirmed on Jan. 7, 2021 that the victim, David Peart, 30, of East 166th Street in Morrisania was pronounced deceased on Monday, Jan. 4, 2021 and the shooting was subsequently classified as a homicide. There were no arrests and the investigation continued.
Pursuant to the ongoing investigation, on Jan. 21, 2021 police confirmed Dequan Hopkins, 33, of Courtlandt Avenue in the Melrose section of the Bronx was arrested in the 42nd precinct at 11.12 a.m. the same day and charged with murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a loaded firearm.
An arrest is not proof that a person is guilty of a crime.
