A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a murder inquiry after a 38-year-old man died following a fatal stabbing at East 176th Street subway station, located on the border of Mt. Hope and Morris Heights, police said.
Officers from the NYPD’s 46th Precinct (Transit District 11) had been asking for the public’s help identifying the person seen in the attached video who was sought regarding the fatal assault.
A police spokesperson said, “It was reported to police that on Thursday, Oct. 6, 2022, at approximately 2030 hours, inside the New York City subway station located at East 176 Street and Jerome Avenue, a 38-year-old male was exiting a northbound ‘4’ train onto the platform, when an unknown individual approached him and displayed a large knife.”
The spokesperson continued, “Unprovoked, the individual proceeded to stab the victim multiple times to the back and chest before fleeing to the street level.” According to police, the suspect was last seen fleeing westbound on East 176th Street.
Police said EMS responded to the incident location and transported the victim to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he had been listed in a serious but stable condition. However, they said he subsequently succumbed to his injuries, and the incident was later deemed a homicide. There were no initial arrests, and the investigation had been ongoing.
The victim was later identified as Charles Moore, 38, of Belmont.
The suspect was described as an adult male with a dark complexion, around 5 feet, 11 inches tall, weighing 160 pounds, with a medium build. He had last been seen wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt, black sweatpants, black Nike sneakers with a gray logo, and was carrying a black backpack.
A surveillance video, taken from the incident location, which shows the suspect, is attached.
Pursuant to the investigation, police said on Saturday, Oct. 8, that Saquan Lemons, 27, of Morris Heights was arrested in connection with the incident on Saturday at around 10 a.m. in the 46th Precinct. He was charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon.
A person arrested and charged with a crime is deemed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.
