Many Americans have postponed medical appointments, including preventative cancer screenings, for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as reported recently in The Wall Street Journal. Researchers estimate this could lead to 10,000 breast and colorectal cancer deaths over the next decade.
Montefiore Health System representatives say this is especially troubling in the local Bronx community since:
- Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in New York State, and pre-COVID, was reported to be a leading cause of death for Hispanic women in the U.S.
- Women in the Bronx are 23 percent more likely than the average woman in New York State to get a cervical cancer diagnosis.
To get women screened, Montefiore is holding its annual See, Test & Treat event on Saturday, May 15 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Greene Medical Arts Pavilion, located at 3400 Bainbridge Avenue, and will offer free cervical and breast cancer screenings for women who have limited or no insurance to identify early signs of disease.
Women are encouraged to sign up for the screening in advance by calling (718) 920-4600 and get any questions they may have answered in advance. The event is free for women who are uninsured and underinsured.
In advance of that, on Thursday, May 13, at 6 p.m., a virtual Breast and Cervical Cancer Workshop will be held on Zoom, with guest speaker, Dr. Calvin Lambert, MD to answer questions from the public. To register for this separate virtual event, email ctejeda@montefiore.org.
