A car rolled off an upper level parking lot in the Marble Hill section of The Bronx in the early hours of Sunday, police said.

According to an NYPD spokesperson, the incident unfolded at 5.12 a.m. on Sunday, June 16, when “a Blue Porsche traveled off the second level of the parking garage onto the street.” The spokesperson said the incident occurred at 10 West 225th Street, the location of a Target store garage, adding that the driver of the porche was unknown. “They did not remain on scene,” he said.

The spokesperson said the investigation is ongoing.

Meanwhile, the FDNY said they were alerted to an incident at 11.21 a.m. on June 16 at 10 West 225th Street by the Major Deegan Expressway and Broadway in The Bronx.

They said it was regarding a report of a car that had fallen through [part of a] wall of the upper deck of a parking garage. They said FDNY units responded to the scene, and NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) has been assigned to carry out an investigation. They said there were no reported injuries.

Local resident, Stephanie Coggins, said, “That parking lot is terrible, full of gigantic cracks that look like a recent earthquake.” Coggins acknowledged she had not been to the parking lot recently but that had always been her observation of it.

Norwood News has contacted DOB and Target for comment. We have not yet heard from Target. DOB press secretary, Andrew Rudansky, from DOB said earlier on Sunday, DOB inspectors were called to the scene at 40 West 225th Street in The Bronx, in order to conduct a structural stability inspection of the building, after a car drove off the side of the rooftop parking deck of the single-story, commercial building.

“Our preliminary investigation at the scene determined that the vehicle impacted the side wall of the rooftop parking area, falling 20 feet to an unoccupied fenced-in area below,” Rudansky said. “A section of the side wall was damaged in the incident and fell to the ground as well.”

Rudansky said the investigation did not find any evidence that the commercial building and parking deck were structurally unstable. “We have issued a Partial Vacate Order impacting the area directly around the southeast corner of the parking deck, where the side wall was [damaged],” he said. “We have also ordered the property owners to provide barriers around this area, blocking it off from the rest of the parking deck.”

Rudansky concluded saying, “In addition, we have ordered the property owners to retain the services of a structural engineer, in order to produce an engineering report for the entire building to submit to DOB for our review.”

As reported, Council Member Pierina Sanchez (C.D. 14) announced new legislation on April 25, inspired by the Billingsley Terrace partial building collapse on Dec. 11, 2023.
