Police said on Thursday, July 20, that two people have been arrested following the multiple, non-fatal shooting of four people, including two children under the age of 7, on Tuesday, July 11, in Fordham Manor. They added that the investigation is ongoing.
As reported, at around 5.48 p.m. on the day of the assault, police said two males approached St. James Park on a scooter at East 193rd Street and Morris Avenue. They said one got off the scooter and fired numerous times, hitting a 25-year-old man in the lower back, a 23-year-old man in the left thigh, a 6-year-old boy in the right calf, and a 3-year-old male toddler in the right calf, the latter a bullet graze wound.
They said all four victims were removed to St. Barnabas Hospital in stable condition and that the suspects fled eastbound on East 193rd Street and then southbound onto Creston Avenue.
As reported, the NYPD had named and released a video and photo of the suspects sought in connection to the incident on Wednesday, July 12, and had asked for the public’s assistance locating and identifying them.
Additional media was released by police on Friday, July 14, showing the two individuals sought. The said one was believed to have fired the gun and was described as a male “with a dark complexion, slim build and large black hair.” They said the video and photos showed the individual prior to the incident, obtained from nearby 108 Field Place.
They said the second suspect was believed to be the scooter driver and was described as a male with “a medium complexion, medium build and black hair in braids.” They said the video and photos showed the person after the incident, obtained from the corner of East 183rd Street and Morris Avenue.
On Tuesday, July 18, pursuant to an ongoing investigation, police released additional attached photos and also named the suspects, asking the public, once again, for help identifying them. They named “Individual 1” as Angel Hernandez, 20, and described him a male with a medium complexion. They named “Individual” 2 as Mikel Taylor, 16, and described him as a male with a dark complexion.
On Thursday, July 20, cops said an unnamed 16-year-old male youth was arrested on Wednesday, July 19, at 7.20 p.m. in the 52nd Precinct. He was charged with four counts of attempted murder.
In addition, cops said Angel Hernandez, 20, of Fordham Manor was arrested on Thursday, July 20, at 10.57 a.m. in the 52nd Precinct. He was also charged with four counts of attempted murder.
As previously reported, local residents have given their reaction to Norwood News to the shocking, daylight shooting at the park where scores of people had gathered on Tuesday to enjoy a sunny summer’s evening.
As reported, a 5-year-old girl was shot while sitting in a car with her father on June 30 in the Olinville section of The Bronx on the last day of Gun Violence Awareness Month. As of July 9, year-to-date shootings in The Bronx were down by 27.3 percent (173 v 238) compared to the same time last year and year-to-date shooting victims in The Bronx as of the same date were also down by 24.5 percent (210 v 278)).
In the 52nd Precinct, which covers Bedford Park, Fordham, Kingsbridge, Norwood, Bronx Park, and University Heights, year-to-date shootings were down by 55.6 percent (8 v 18) compared to the same time last year and year-to-date shooting victims were also down by 61.9 percent (8 v 21).
A spate of 16 reported Bronx shootings over the Fourth of July holiday weekend prompted elected officials, including Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark, State Sen. Jamaal Bailey (S.D. 36), and Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, along with various cure violence groups, members of the NYPD, and members of local precinct community councils, to hold a press conference at Lou Gehrig Plaza on July 6 in order to call for an end to the violence. The 52nd Precinct Community Council was represented by Jerry Landron.
Gibson said of the event, “Today, I joined with Bronx DA Darcel Clark, Assistant Chief Philip Rivera, local elected officials and cure violence organizations to condemn the gun violence we witnessed over the holiday weekend. Thank you to our Bronx DA, NYPD, and our cure violence organizations who are on the ground doing the work and preventing violence everyday.”
She added, “Lastly, thank you to Mayor Eric Adams for allocating nearly $200 million for programming to reduce gun violence in communities & connect New Yorkers with city-funded services, including school conflict mediation, violence interruption, non-traditional therapeutic services, & more.”

A rally was held at the site of the shooting on Friday, July 14, organized by Bronx Rises Against Gun Violence (B.R.A.G.) and was attended by various other cure violence groups like RTG (Release the Grip) and SOS (Save our Streets), elected officials including State Sen. Robert Jackson (S.D. 31), Gibson and District 14 City Council Member Pierina Sanchez, the 52nd Precinct Community Council, community residents, and the NYPD. Story to follow.

It’s obvious that you have two black men but a very long article refuses to use those words but instead says (2nd suspect) “described as a male with a medium complexion, medium build and black hair in braids. ” without the video that could be a Hispanic, Japanese or white male (with a tan). Good for you for ignoring facts to stay politically correct. Good for you.
These two lowlife poor excuses for human beings must be caught and convicted of attempted murder of 2 children and 2 adults. Not only that felony possession of a firearm. Endangering the welfare of a child, discharging a firearm in public. I mean they need to pile on the charges. As many felonies as possible. So they could make sure that they never see the lights of a city park at night again for the next 25 years.
