Police said a man who was hospitalized and was initially reported to be in critical condition after apparently being hit by a subway in the Fordham section of The Bronx on Thursday morning has died.
A police spokesperson told Norwood News, “On Thursday, July 18, at approximately 08.52 hours, police responded to a 911 call of an aided [person] at the Fordham Road [subway station], northbound D line within the confines of the 46 Precinct, Transit District 11.”
The spokesperson added, “Upon arrival, officers observed an unidentified, unconscious and unresponsive adult male with severe head trauma. EMS responded and transported the aided male to St. Barnabas Hospital in critical condition. The investigation is ongoing.”
Asked if there was any further description of the victim, police said there was not. Asked if it was known if the cause of the injuries was an accident or something else, police said they were still investigating, though they said officers/detectives were no longer at the scene.
The FDNY later said they were alerted to a report of a person under the tracks of the B/D train at 199 East 188th Street / Fordham Road in The Bronx on Thursday at 8.54 a.m. They said one person was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital and their condition and description was unknown.
The NYPD later told Norwood News on Thursday that the victim was in stable condition but some time later confirmed he had died.
NYC Transit posted on X (formerly Twitter) earlier this morning, “Emergency teams are responding to a person who was struck by a train near Fordham Rd. B service is suspended. Some northbound D trains will end at 145 St, 161 St-Yankee Stadium, or Tremont Av.”
A further update read, “Northbound B/D trains are delayed while emergency teams respond to a person who was struck by a train near Fordham Rd.”
Later, another update was posted, “Note: D trains are running with delays.” NYC Transit officials said the C train was also affected, writing, “C/D trains are running with delays in both directions after emergency teams responded to a person who was struck by a train near Fordham Rd. C/D trains have resumed making scheduled stops in both directions.”
The NY Daily News had earlier also reported on the incident.
Norwood News reached out to the MTA for comment. The agency had none.
