A female resident of Tracey Towers has died following a reported stabbing at the Jerome Park Mitchel Lama housing complex, police said.
An NYPD spokesperson said a 52-year-old woman is deceased following the incident which took place on Thursday morning, July 14, at around 10.50 a.m. Asked for further details, the spokesperson said it was believed to be “domestic in nature.”
The spokesperson said a person of interest is currently in custody but police were unable to confirm the age or gender of the person.
Asked if it was a neighbor who raised the alarm, the spokesperson said this was unclear for now.
Later on Thursday, an NYPD spokesperson provided more information on the incident, saying “On Thursday, July 14, 2022, at approximately 1051 hours, police responded to a 911 call of an aided individual inside of 40 West Mosholu Parkway South, within the confines of the 52 Precinct.”
The spokesperson added, “Upon arrival, officers observed a 52-year-old female unconscious and unresponsive, with multiple stab wounds about the body. EMS responded and transported the aided female to Saint Barnabas Medical Center where she was later pronounced deceased. A knife was recovered on scene and a 59-year old male was taken into custody.”
The deceased has since been identified by police as Monica Akua, 52, of 40 West Mosholu Parkway South (Tracey Towers).
The NYPD said Anthony Erzuah, 59, also of 40 West Mosholu Parkway South, was identified as the person arrested. He has been charged with murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.
A person arrested and charged with a crime is deemed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.
In early June, Norwood News reported on the status of some NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) violations recorded at Tracey Towers amid an exterior wall collapse, along with updates from the management company on various longstanding complaints raised by residents. The Towers are home to several, first generation residents from Ghana. Residents were recently notified of a change of property site manager, with Leslie Reynaldo taking over the role.
Before the June primary election, we reported on how there had been confusion among a number of residents at the Towers when they received letters from NYC Board of Elections (BOE) advising them that they would no longer be voting at the usual on-site voting center but at alternate voting centers either at Scott Towers or at Mosholu Montefiore Community Center. That decision was later reversed, and all Tracey Towers residents were able to vote onsite at the Towers in the end. BOE put the issue down to “a clerical error.”
