UPDATE East Bronx: 44-Year-Old Man Dies following E-Scooter Accident

A 44-year-old man has died following a road traffic accident involving an e-scooter in the Valley section of the east Bronx, police said.

 

According to the NYPD, on Friday, Nov. 3, at around 11.39 p.m., the man was operating a stand-up e-scooter, traveling eastbound on Givan Avenue.

They said as the victim was crossing at the intersection of Sexton Place and Givan Avenue, he lost control of the scooter and was thrown to the pavement. “The male sustained trauma to his head and body and was transported by EMS to NYC Health and Hospitals/Jacobi in stable condition,” a police spokesperson said.

 

Police said that on Sunday, Nov. 5, while admitted at Jacobi Medical Center, the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. They said the case will be further investigated by the NYPD Highway District Collision Investigation Squad.

The victim has been identified as Alexander Murillo of Gunther Avenue in The Valley section of The Bronx.

 

The NYPD handles all criminal aspects of collision investigations, while NYC Department of Transportation reviews the street design at the locations of such crashes.

 

As reported, the topic of e-bikes and e-bike lanes came up during our interview with Democratic incumbent and District 13 City Council Member Marjorie Velázquez for a profile story on her candidacy ahead of the general election race held on Nov. 7, which the councilwoman has since conceded to Republican candidate Kristy Marmorato. Attached are some of the latest motor vehicle collision statistics for The Bronx, Manhattan and citywide in September 2023 (latest available). We’ve contacted the NYPD to ask if the motor vehicle collisions include e-scooters and will update this story upon receipt of any response.

As reported, an 83-year-old man from Manhattan died following a Bronx two-vehicle collision in Kingsbridge on Aug. 28, after a duration in hospital.

 

In Belmont, a scooter rider was also  seriously injured in an East Fordham Road crash on Friday, Oct. 13.

 

On Aug. 30, as reported, one person was hospitalized after an apparent scooter collision.

Norwood News readers recently weighed in on a pilot program launched in June on the expansion of e-bikes and other lightweight motorized vehicles in parks. 

 

As also reported, a 30-year-old man, and father to three young children, died following a single-vehicle accident on Jerome Avenue in Norwood in the early hours of Sunday, Nov. 12, and his wife remains in critical condition at St. Barnabas Hospital. The funeral details for Jonathan Ramos have since been announced.
