UPDATE Community Mourns Death of Howard E. Kamiel, President of Amalgamated Housing Corporation

Representatives of the Amalgamated Housing Corporation in in the Van Cortlandt Village section of The Bronx, said they are deeply saddened to announce the sudden passing of the president of its board of directors, Howard E. Kamiel, on Tuesday, Dec. 12, at the age of 70.

 

“Howard was a longtime resident of the Amalgamated, his family having moved here in 1970,” said Jack Spiegel, first vice-president of the corporation, on behalf of the board and members, via a public statement. “At the time of his passing, he lived with his wife Teresita, in the same apartment his family originally moved into.

 

He went to William Howard Taft High School and continued his education at Lehman College, graduating in 1976 with a B.A. degree in accounting. Following his father’s lead, he was a carrier for the United States Postal Service for 34 years, until his retirement in 2008.”

The statement continued, “Since his retirement, Howard has been very active in service to Amalgamated Houses as well as several other community organizations. He had been president of the Amalgamated Housing Corporation since May 2010. He served as secretary for the Herman Liebman Memorial Fund and was a former president of A.H. Consumers Society, Inc.

 

He was a board member of the Bronx Jewish Community Council and served on its finance committee. He was also on the advisory committee for the Amalgamated-Park Reservoir’s NORC (Naturally Occurring Retirement Community) program. Recently, he was appointed to the board of directors of the Kingsbridge Riverdale Van Cortlandt Development Corporation.”

The statement concluded, “Howard leaves behind his wife, Teresita, his daughter, Stephanie, his brother, Marvin, and his sister, Denise.”

 

Spiegel said that until the Amalgamated stockholders meeting in May, he will assume the president’s responsibilities. Amalgamated Housing Corporation is located at 98 Van Cortlandt Park South, The Bronx.

 

Spiegel also said that Kamiel’s funeral took place on Friday, Dec. 15. He added, “In honor of Howard, donations can be made to the Herman Liebman Memorial Fund, https://www.hermanliebman.coop or the Bronx Jewish Community Council, https://www.bjcconline.org.”

Kamiel’s funeral service was held Weinstein Memorial Chapel, 1652 Central Park Ave., Yonkers, NY 10710, and was followed by a burial service at Mt. Hope Cemetery, 50 Jackson Ave./Saw Mill River Road, Hastings on Hudson, NY 10706.
