During an NYPD “Street Meet” held at Poe Park in Fordham Manor, in memory of the Bronx teen on Thursday, Aug. 18, after meeting with youth coordination officers from the 44th, 46th, 48th, 50th and 52nd Precincts and members of the NYPD Explorers Program, NYPD assistant commissioner of youth strategies, Kevin O’Connor, said, “So, we just had a 14-year-old boy shot in the head, it looks like it’s accidental.”

O’Connor added, “They were playing with a gun, he died [inaudible] the chest. I’m sorry but he passed away.”

State Sen. Gustavo Rivera (S.D. 33) who is currently running for re-election in redrawn Senate District 33, said of the incident, “My heart is heavy today. We’ve lost a 14-year-old boy to gun violence. Yet another family will grieve a senseless murder and our community will mourn again. Something’s got to give. We need these guns off our streets and our City needs to come together to take care of our youth.”

He added, “My heat is with my neighbors and those who loved this young soul. In the Bronx, we take care of each other. I’m committed to making sure that our borough gets everything we need to keep our children safe. My team and I are monitoring the situation to assist in any way we can.”

A female resident of the block where Jacob lived in Allerton later told Norwood News she had seen the teen just days before his death. “I saw him on 194 Street and said to him, ‘Don’t you live on Radcliff?’ and he said ‘yeah,’ that he lived over there too,” she said, and did not comment further.
