The FDNY was called to a residential home in the Bedford Park section of The Bronx on Sunday for reports of a gas odor.
An FDNY spokesperson said they received a call at 4.05 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 179 East 205th Street. A few residents of the building were seen observing the FDNY at work at street level at one point from the door of the building but later disappeared before we had a chance to speak to them.
Two FDNY vehicles, which the department described as one engine and one truck, were seen responding to the incident on the narrow street located between the Grand Concourse and Lisbon Place/Mosholu Parkway South.
They said the incident last around 46 minutes. A resident of the area was later seen assisting the department with a carjack in efforts to move a car that was parked on the street in order to allow the two FDNY vehicles to pass through.
Ongoing works on the street for two different construction developments have hindered traffic from passing and have also reduced parking on the street.
We spoke to a few bystanders in the area but none of them appeared to know what had caused the incident.
FDNY officials later said they shut down gas from a stove.
A Con Edison vehicle was also seen parked down the street from the affected location on the day of the incident. Norwood News reached out to Con Ed for more information on the incident. Con Ed’s Jamie McShane responded, saying their crew responded to a report of a gas leak at a 4th floor apartment at the specified address. “Our crews determined the source of the leak was a refurbished stovetop,” he said. “The appliance was left off.”
As reported, Con Ed have been working at various locations in the neighborhood for several months now. The company is performing electric upgrade work on East 203rd Street between Grand Concourse and Valentine Avenue in Bedford Park from Oct. 4 to Nov. 29, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m, and on East 203rd Street between Valentine Avenue and East Mosholu Parkway South from Oct. 17 to Nov. 29, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and thanks residents for their patience during this work. Residents should expect street closures, limited street parking and noise during the duration of the work. If anyone has any concerns, please email worknotice@coned.com.
A shooting had been reported at the same East 205th Street address around a week or so before the gas leak occurred.
