The NYPD is asking for the public’s help locating the person seen in the attached video who they say is wanted in connection with an attempted armed assault that occurred in University Heights.

Police said that on Monday, Sept. 23, at around 2 a.m., a 28-year-old female victim was inside her apartment in the vicinity of Andrews Avenue and West 179h Street with an unidentified man she had met that night. “Once inside the apartment, the man made sexual advances, which the victim rejected.

“As the female escorted him out of her apartment, the wanted individual brandished a firearm and discharged one round towards the apartment door, which caused damage to the wall,” police said. “The wanted individual then fled on foot to parts unknown.” Police said there were no physical injuries reported as a result of the incident.

They said the suspect is described as male, has a dark complexion, is estimated to be between 25 and 40 years of age, and has a medium build. They said he was last seen wearing black jeans, a black t-shirt with a multi-color drawing on the front, and black sneakers.

October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month. According to New York State government officials, access to guns radically increases lethality risk in situations of domestic abuse, and abusers with guns are five times more likely to kill their partners.

They said every month, an average of 70 women are shot and killed by an intimate partner in the United States. Black women are twice as likely to be fatally shot by an intimate partner when compared to white women. They said 4.5 million women have reported being threatened with a gun by an intimate partner.

They said in 2020, a firearm was used in nearly half, over 45%, of all intimate partner homicides outside of New York City. Statewide, guns are used in 35% of all intimate partner homicides.

They said that since its establishment in 2012, 17 of the 25 cases reviewed by the NYS Domestic Violence Fatality Review Team involved access to firearms.

On Oct. 9, Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark joined other New York district attorneys and colleagues for the signing into law by New York State Gov. Kathy Hochul of the latest package of New York State gun violence prevention and protection bills.
