Two people have died as a result of an early morning crash on the Northbound Bronx River Parkway at East Gun Hill Road in Norwood.
The incident was reported at 1:38 a.m. on Thursday, Jun. 11, when police were informed that a car was on fire at the location. Soon afterwards officers from the 47th precinct and the NYPD’s Highway Patrol quickly shutdown the roadway and attempted to remove one victim from the burning vehicle.
One police official reported a male driver was pulled from a burning 2019 Dodge Challenger, “unconscious and unresponsive”. The man whose identity has not been yet disclosed was pronounced dead at the scene.
A police unit reported that a second victim, believed to be a pedestrian, “was also discovered unconscious and unresponsive and lying on the roadway in close proximity to the vehicle”.
The as-yet-unidentified 60-year-old victim was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center with serious injuries. One source reported a serious arm and foot injury. Officials later reported the male victim had died upon arrival at Jacobi.
The exit ramp and several lanes of the northbound roadway were shut until after 5:00 a.m. while the NYPD’s Crash Investigation Squad carried out their investigation.
The NYPD later reported after a preliminary investigation that it was determined that the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed. “He failed to properly navigate the roadway as he was exiting off the ramp and struck an unidentified pedestrian before careening into a concrete wall, causing the vehicle to erupt in flames,” a representative said.
Police officials said the investigation is ongoing and the names of the two victims are pending next-of-kin notification.
