The NYPD said two people are dead and two were injured in various subway incidents which took place across The Bronx last weekend.
An FDNY spokesperson said they had one report of a person who “fell on [a] roadbed” at around 3:57 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8, at the Baychester Avenue subway station, located at Thomas E. Brown Avenue and Tillotson Avenue in the Eastchester section of The Bronx, which serves the 5 train. They said the injured party was transported to Jacobi Hospital in Morris Park, and the department had no information on the victim’s sex, age or condition.
The NYPD later said that on Sunday, Dec. 8, at around 4.14 p.m., police from the 47th Precinct / Transit District 12 responded to a 911 call regarding a person on the tracks of the same Baychester Avenue subway station (5 line). They said that upon arrival, officers were informed a 13-year-old boy was observed walking on the 5 line subway tracks.
They said EMS transported the victim to NYC Health and Hospitals/Jacobi with minor injuries. We asked the NYPD if the teen had been riding alone or if he was riding with others. We did not receive an immediate response. The NY Post also reported on the story.
In response to a second query about another report of another subway-related accident at Baychester Avenue subway station on the same date at 4.40 p.m. which reportedly involved a man who had either been pushed or fell onto the tracks, the NYPD said an aided person was observed on the roadbed by the train operator. A spokesperson said the train was stopped and the aided man was transported to Jacobi Hospital with injuries to his groin. They said the man did not make contact with the train.
As reported, one day prior to these two incidents, at 6.48 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, the FDNY said another person was reportedly hit by a southbound D train at the Kingsbridge Road subway station located at East Kingsbridge Road and the Grand Concourse in Fordham Manor.
The NYPD said the male victim was standing close to the platform edge and dropped his cellphone on the track. They said a few moments after he went down to try to retrieve it, the D train entered the station. As reported, the patient was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital in Belmont in an unknown condition following the incident. Police later said the man was pronounced deceased upon arrival.
The FDNY said another subway incident was also reported on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 8.46 p.m. at East 180th Street subway station located in the vicinity of East 180th street and Morris Park Avenue in the Van Nest section. An FDNY source said EMS responded “to a report of a person struck by a train.” They said the victim was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital in an unknown condition.
Police later said the female, aided person was struck by a southbound 2 train at the location. They said she sustained injuries to her abdomen and was removed to St. Barnabas hospital, where she was pronounced deceased on arrival.
On Oct. 31, New York Mayor Eric Adams announced the expansion of a pilot program involving drones which have been monitoring the tops of subway cars for potential subway surfing. “We have changed the dynamics, and we’ve become more proactive by allowing the drone operation to be incorporated in the heavily-used train lines where subway surfing is taking place,” Adams said at the time.
The mayor said the 900 drone flights conducted so far this year by law enforcement have saved 114 lives.
