Two police officers were injured and five suspects were quickly tracked down and arrested after a routine traffic stop turned into a wild chase through the streets of Bedford Park.
According to police, the incident began at 4:50 p.m. on May 2, when officers on routine patrol “observed a vehicle travel through a steady red light” at the corner of Briggs Avenue and East 194th Street. When officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, the vehicle sped off.
“He continued to drive in a reckless manor, striking multiple vehicles, evading police and disobeying their orders,” said Det. Annette Shelton. The vehicle was struck and pinned by a police vehicle along East Bedford Park Boulevard, between Valentine and Briggs Avenues.
Shelton continued, “All occupants of the vehicle fled on foot, but were quickly apprehended. Two officers and one suspect were removed to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. They were treated and released.”
One worker at a local store reported, “The police car hit the bumper of the vehicle and blocked it in the middle of the street and the suspects ran towards Valentine Avenue.”
One witness reported that police needed a stun-gun to subdue one suspect, cornered on the roof of 210 E. 201st Street. It’s believed that the suspect suffered a puncture wound to his abdomen from the stun-gun, as well as an injured head and right arm and was transported from the 52nd Precinct on Webster Avenue to a local hospital.
Police arrested David Inguanzo, 39, of University Heights, who was charged with unauthorized use of vehicle, fleeing an officer in motor vehicle, reckless endangerment, and aggravated unlicensed operator. Junior Alvarado, 22, of Manhattan was charged with resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration and disorderly conduct.
Also arrested was Edwin Ozuna, 24, of Manhattan, who was charged with resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration, Justin Delahoz, 21, of Manhattan, who also faces resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration and disorderly conduct and Cristal Quezada, 27, of Manhattan who was charged with obstructing governmental administration, facilitating aggravated unlicensed operator of a motor vehicle.
Police officials declined to give any information on the injured officers, where one officer suffered a laceration to the right arm while in pursuit of the suspect in Fordham. The officer was transported to a local hospital by a police vehicle.
Despite repeated attempts, police also declined to give any information regarding an unrelated car stop along East 194th Street, between Bainbridge and Marion avenues, that happened at 6:15 p.m, on April 30.
