New York State Department of Transportation (NYS DOT) is advising motorists of an upcoming traffic pattern change on the eastbound Bruckner Expressway (I-278) in The Bronx. The Exit 49 ramp to northbound Sheridan Boulevard (NY-895) and the Hunts Point Market will be relocated from the right lane to the left lane, beginning on or about Thursday, March 16, 2023 at 10 p.m. and continuing through May 31, 2024, approximately.

Department officials said at Exit 49, the two right lanes will continue on eastbound Bruckner Expressway (I-278), and the left lane will exit to northbound Sheridan Boulevard (NY-895). Signs will be posted along eastbound Bruckner Expressway (I-278) to alert motorists of these traffic pattern changes for accessing the northbound Sheridan Boulevard (NY-895) and the Hunts Point Market.

Officials said this change in traffic pattern is necessary to facilitate construction activities as part of the Hunts Point Interstate Access Improvement Project Contract 3. Inclement weather could cause this change in traffic pattern to be rescheduled.

For real-time travel information, motorists are advised to check New York State’s official traffic and travel information source, 511NY, before traveling. Call 5-1-1, visit www.511NY.org or download the free 511NY mobile app on iTunes or Google Play. The free service allows users to check road conditions, view traffic cameras and link to air and transit information. The app features drive mode, which provides audible alerts along a chosen route while a user is driving, warning them about incidents and construction.

Motorists are urged to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones. Fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. Convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver license.
