Tonight, 11th Council District Debate, Bedford Park Senior Center (Updated)

Tonight, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Sister Annunciata Bethel Senior Center (also known as the Bedford Park Senior Center), 243 E. 204th St., the Norwood News is hosting a debate among candidates for the 11th Council District. Everyone is invited to attend.

The candidates include Cheryl Keeling, Cliff Stanton and Andrew Cohen.

( Update (9:29 a.m.): After a challenge from Stanton’s camp, Keeling’s petition signatures were ruled inadequate on Tuesday by the Board of Elections, meaning her name is not being added to the ballot at this point. Keeling submitted more than 1,000 petition signatures, but only 427 were deemed valid by the board. That leaves her just 23 signatures short of the 450 needed to get on the ballot. She is challenging the ruling in court and trying to get at least 23 signatures restored. Keeling, who holds a law degree, will be back in court today. There may not be another ruling either way by the end of the day, so we’re expecting Keeling to be in attendance tonight. Update (3:11 p.m.): The ruling against Keeling was upheld today by a BOE referee, which means Keeling remains off the ballot. Still, Keeling still has a court challenge ahead of her as a last chance to get on the ballot. Because she has not terminated her campaign, Keeling will be participating in the debate tonight.)

The 11th Council District includes the neighborhoods of Norwood, Bedford Park, Woodlawn, Wakefield, Kingsbridge, Kingsbridge Heights and Riverdale.

Find out what the candidates stand for and how they would represent you in city government. Ask them the questions you want answered.

Everyone is invited to attend, but campaign signs and materials will not be permitted inside. Also, those wearing campaign-specific t-shirts will be limited to 20 people per candidate. If you’re a supporter of one of the candidates, please keep your campaign-related gear at home.

The Norwood News will be moderating the debate, but we want to hear from you about what questions you want the candidates answering. You can email us your questions at norwoodnews@norwoodnews.org, Tweet us questions to @norwoodnews or post questions on our Facebook page. We’ll also be accepting written questions submitted during the debate.

Later today, we’ll post earlier debates among these candidates and check in with their campaigns. Stay tuned.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts.
