Following a winter hiatus, and the successful completion of earlier stages of construction and roadway work which began in September 2020, the MTA Bridges and Tunnels division announced that it is resuming roadway work, and advancing to the next stage of deck replacement at Throggs Neck Bridge.

MTA officials said, weather permitting, roadway work for the new phase, known as Stage 5 (of six stages) begins on Saturday night, Feb. 26, with an around-the-clock lane closure in place on Sunday, Feb. 27, to accommodate the work zone in the middle, Bronx-bound lane of the bridge span. They said motorists should expect a series of lane closures in both directions overnight on Saturday to allow for the transition to the new traffic pattern around the work zone.

As in previous construction stages, MTA officials say that there will be no additional loss of traffic lane capacity during peak travel hours on weekdays, due to the use of a moveable barrier that can be shifted to allow for three, Bronx-bound lanes in the morning (5 a.m. to 10 a.m.) and three Queens-bound lanes in the afternoon (2:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.).

According to the MTA, Bronx-bound customers will also experience a divided highway with two lanes open to the left of the construction zone, and one lane open to the right of the work zone during morning peak periods.

As with all new traffic patterns, officials said motorists should expect a period of adjustment and pay attention to posted signage. This traffic pattern is expected to be in effect through late Spring.

All work is being closely coordinated with the neighboring Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, according to the MTA, and this bridge is available as an alternate option for Throggs Neck Bridge customers.
