Eighteen days after rioters burned and looted dozens of stores in the Fordham Heights and Kingsbridge sections of the Bronx, police say three men have been charged with the daylight burglary of Modell’s Sporting Goods on East Fordham Road, a store that had closed due to bankruptcy on Apr. 15 following a period of poor sales, and the statewide PAUSE order which went into effect in March.

According to NYPD spokeswoman, Detective Sophia Mason, the burglary was reported at 9:22 a.m. on Friday, Jun. 19. “Officers responded to a burglary at 270 East Fordham Road in the confines of the 46th precinct,” Mason said.

“Upon arrival, officers observed a suspect exiting the location through a side door with a large bag containing store merchandise. Upon further investigation, officers discovered an additional individual inside of the location as well as another individual just outside of the location with several bags containing store merchandise.” Mason said that all three men were taken into custody at the scene.

The NYPD later charged George Franco, 49, of Decatur Avenue, Navada Posley, 49, of Valentine Avenue and Israel Marrero, 52, of Gouverneur Avenue, all residents of the Bronx, with burglary, criminal possession of stolen property and criminal trespassing. Attempts to reach all three men for comment were unsuccessful.

According to the New York City Department of Small Business Services, some 450 stores across the city were looted or damaged during the recent riots.

Founded in 1898, Modell’s shut all its 153 stores on Apr. 15 after the family-owned business, which reported $765 million in revenue in 2015, filed for bankruptcy on Apr. 11, 2020. The company blamed competition in the sneaker business and skyrocketing rents for the businesses decline.

Modell’s filed and was granted two suspensions of their bankruptcy proceedings due to COVID-19, and is currently seeking a three-month extension as the company hopes to open 60 locations in several states, excluding New York.

Modell’s owned 153 stores when they filed for bankruptcy and the company announced that it hired Tiger Capital Group to handle the liquidation of its assets, leaving the livelihoods of many of its 3,623 employees uncertain.

Aside from the 270 East Fordham Road location, Modell’s also had stores at 31 East Fordham Road, 1557 Westchester Avenue, and at 204 East 161 Street. Repeated calls for comment from Modell’s went unreturned.

During the widely reported incidents of looting and unrest on the night of Jun. 1, looters apparently missed Modell’s, smashing instead the windows of Foot Locker and Jimmy Jazz on the next block, and cutting holes in their metal security gates.
