‘The Bronx Vote Must Be Earned’: Bronx-Focused Mayoral Forum Sunday

Freshman Bronx Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj (80th District — Norwood, Bedford Park, Morris Park, Pelham Gardens) has this crazy idea that the Bronx and it’s 1.4 million residents should matter to the multitude of  candidates looking to replace Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

To make sure this happens, Gjonaj is hosting a candidates forum on Sunday, June 2, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Christopher Columbus High School auditorium, 925 Astor Ave.

He even has a motto for the forum: “The Bronx Vote Must Be Earned.”

It’s unclear exactly who’s on board, but several high profile Democratic hopefuls and Democrat-turned-Independent/Republican Adolfo Carrion are expected to be there. And so will we.

The forum will be moderated by BronxTalk’s Gary Axelbank and Norwood News Editor Alex Kratz, Riverdale Press Editor Kate Pastor and City Limits  Managing Editor (and former Norwood News editor) Jordan Moss will be panelists asking questions of each candidate in attendance.

Audience members are also encouraged to come with written questions for the candidates.

Gjonaj is also hoping for the Bronx to be heard in a louder voice in the state legislature. On June 18, he’s hosting the first Bronx Day in Albany.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
