The Bronx Crime Report: BX Science Students Caught in Act? Diner Robbed at Gun Point, Plus Latest Stats

The Bronx Crime report is posted on Breaking Bronx on Mondays.

The Bronx Crime Report is a regular feature on the Norwood News’ Breaking Bronx blog that is published weekly (usually on Mondays). It will include the latest crime statistics for the 52nd Precinct — Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham-Bedford, and parts of Fordham, University Heights and Kingsbridge Heights — as well as crime updates, stories and features from throughout the Bronx.

The Stories

The story of three Bronx High School of Science track team members who were charged with hazing another team member continues to make headlines, especially in the Daily News. Last week, the DN published excerpts from an email written by Bronx Science Athletic Director Marion Dietrich from two years ago that suggests they knew that inappropriate touching was happening. Dietrich ordered that faculty patrol locker rooms, but those patrols ceased at the beginning of this year, for some reason. The DN also published a photo of two of the defendants in sexually-suggestive poses with younger teammates. On Friday, before appearing in court, the defendants were seen joking around with friends.

After obtaining documents from the Special Commissioner of Investigations, the Riverdale Press learned of several complaints and charges of inappropriate behavior and relationships between teachers and students at several northwest Bronx high schools, including Bronx Science, DeWitt Clinton and John F. Kennedy.

Early last Friday morning, a man walked up to a 28-year-old diner on Broadway in Kingsbridge and robbed him at gun point. On his way out, CBS News reports, he shot the diner in the rear end. (More on this story on other crimes in the Kingsbridge/Riverdale can be found here on the Riverdale Press site.

Contractor Mohammed Riaz, 34, is being charged with cheating workers out of hundreds of thousands of dollars at a Bronx development project, DNAinfo reports.

Police are looking for a man who robbed a woman outside of a bank on the Grand Concourse on Friday night, CBS News reports.

Police say a man who stole a woman’s smart phone on March 2 took a photo of himself smoking weed on the camera. It then appeared on the victim’s Facebook page, the NY Post reports.

A Bedford Park man was arrested and charged with stealing two livery cabs at gun point, Daily News reports.

In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
