The Office of Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14), who represents parts of The Bronx and Queens, is reminding Bronxites that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced recently that it is extending the re-registration periods for the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designations of several countries, including Nepal, Nicaragua and Honduras.

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is a program that allows migrants whose home countries are considered unsafe by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to live and work legally in the United States for a temporary period of time. Residents with TPS have to reregister periodically in order to extend their legal status.

Officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are advising residents that eligible beneficiaries from Nepal must re-register by June 24, 2025 to extend their status for 18 months through June 24, 2025. Eligible beneficiaries from Nicaragua must re-register by July 5, 2025 to extend their status for 18 months through July 5, 2025.

Eligible beneficiaries from Honduras must re-register by July 5, 2025 to extend their status for 18 months through July 5, 2025. Eligible beneficiaries from El Salvador must re-register by March 9, 2025 to extend their status for 18 months through March 9, 2025.

Eligible beneficiaries from Haiti must re-register by August 3, 2024 to extend their status for 18 months through August 3, 2024. Eligible beneficiaries from Sudan must re-register by April 19, 2025 to extend their status for 18 months through April 19, 2025.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
