Amid proposed budget cuts, the first annual Bronx Aging Advocacy Day was held on May 1 on the steps of Bronx Borough Hall as elected officials, advocates, community organizations and seniors gathered to help fight for the protection of equitable services for the elderly population. Bronx nurses were honored and celebrated for their dedication and service during Nurses Week 2023. At NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, nurses were showered with various honors to mark the occasion. Assembly Member John Zaccaro Jr. (A.D. 80), a Democrat, visited Jacobi Medical Center, part of the City’s public hospital system, on Friday, May 15, and presented a proclamation to the nursing staff there in recognition of Nurses Week, which celebrates nurses across the country for all they do. Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson and the Bronx Economic Development Corporation (BXEDC) announced the launch of the first-of-its-kind environmental sustainability challenge on Monday, May 8. BXEDC representatives said the Bronx Green Action Challenge will award up to $1 million to a Bronx-based college or university for the development and implementation of a project or set of projects that improve campus sustainability, and reduce that institution’s environmental footprint. The intersection of Bailey Place and Bailey Avenue in Kingsbridge Heights was officially co-named Angellyh Marieh Yambo Way on April 8, in honor of Angellyh Yambo, the 16-year-old teen who was born and grew up in the area, and who was tragically killed in broad daylight last year when she was hit by a stray bullet, shot by a 17-year-old male youth as she was walking home from school with friends in the Mott Haven section of the borough. Man Arrested for Bronx Brick Attack during Passover as Elected Officials Step Up Efforts to Curb Hate Crimes
Police said a 29-year-old man from Pelham Parkway has been arrested on hate crime and other charges for tossing a brick through the window of his neighbor’s building during the Passover holiday on April 7, as reported. Upon investigation, police attributed the attack to the fact that the victim, longtime Matthews Avenue resident Rochelle Shapiro, had displayed an Israeli flag and a pro-Israel sign in the window. The NYPD Hate Crimes Unit is currently investigating an incident where a slab of concrete was tossed through the living room window of a Pelham Parkway home during the Jewish holiday of Passover.
