Update: Man Arrested on Murder Charges in University Heights Shooting in December

Police have arrested a man on murder charges in connection with a shooting that occurred in University Heights on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020.   On the date in question, at 8.50 p.m., police responded to a 911 call regarding an assault in progress in the vicinity of West 184th Street and Aqueduct Avenue in the University Heights section of the Bronx, in the 52nd precinct.   Upon arrival, officers discovered a 26-year-old man lying on the ground with gunshot wounds to his chest and neck. EMS responded and transported the man to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Body of Man Recovered from Murky Section of East River in University Heights

  A pair of NYPD divers recovered the body of a man who was discovered floating in a murky section of the East River in University Heights on Monday, Nov. 23. The sad discovery was made at 11:20 a.m. According to NYPD spokesman Sergeant Edward Riley, “Police responded to a 911 call for a human body floating in the water” of the East River at 320 West Fordham Road at Exterior Street, a few hundred yards north of the University Heights Bridge. Hate Has No Place in Norwood

Following reports on Sept. 18 of the defacing of a mural painted in support of Black trans lives on 204th Street and Perry Avenue in the Norwood section of the Bronx, reaction from allies and various public officials was swift. Their message? University Heights: Street Renamed in Honor of Local Hero, Purple Heart Recipient

Almost two years after the death of Staff Sergeant Santiago Frias, a  local hero and army veteran who was seriously wounded during the Iraq war, a street renaming ceremony was held in his honor in the University Heights section of the Bronx last month.   Following his return to the U.S., the young man recovered from his wounds, helped raise a family, and devoted time to local children, teaching them the art of self defense.
