Sanchez Announces $1 Million in “Participatory Budgeting” Projects
District 14 City Council Member Pierina Sanchez announced a million-dollar investment in various quality-of-life improvements going to schools, libraries, and senior centers in the district on June 20. The funding came by way of New York City Council’s participatory budgeting (PB) process which, according to New York City Council, is a democratic process in which community members directly decide how to spend part of a public budget. According to the council, the concept originated in Porto Alegre, Brazil in 1989. Today, there are more than 3,000 participatory budgeting processes around the world, most at the municipal level. Police have arrested two people following the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old young man and the wounding of a second 19-year-old male youth during an apparent drive-by shooting following a Fourth of July street celebration in Fordham Heights. One 49-year-old man has been arrested on assault and other charges in connection with the incident. District 14 broadly encompasses some or all of the neighborhoods of Kingsbridge Heights, Fordham Manor, Fordham Heights, Bedford Park, University Heights, Mt. Hope and Morris Heights. Fordham Heights: Man, 62, Hospitalized following Daylight Shooting
A 62-year-old man has been hospitalized following a daylight shooting in Fordham Heights on Friday, June 16. An NYPD spokesperson said, “At 16.50 hours, at 2386 Ryer Avenue, a male…he was shot once in the knee.” The address is the location of Ryer Housing Development, and is located between East 187th Street and East 184th, one block from the Grand Concourse, according to Google Maps.
