Bronx District Attorney Darcel D Clark released the following statement following the announcement of the death of Gen. Colin Powell on Monday, Oct. 18.

“Today we lost an extraordinary American to COVID-19, a person who dedicated his life to the national security of this great country. Colin Powell was a son of the South Bronx, who studied at Morris High School, attended a CUNY college, joined the U.S. Army and went on to become the first Black U.S. National Security Adviser, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Secretary of State,” she said.

“Even after achieving so much, Gen. Powell never forgot his roots, and because of that he holds a special place in our hearts. His service to his country and unwavering leadership, especially during America’s darkest moments, will be forever remembered. His story and successes have inspired and guided many and will continue to do so for many generations to come. I send my condolences to his wife and children during this difficult time, may he Rest In Peace.”

Earlier on Monday, The New York Times and other outlets reported on the general’s death which, according to his family, was caused by complications of COVID-19, due to a weakened immune system from treatment for multiple myeloma. Powell had been vaccinated for COVID-19.
