Editor’s note: We mistakenly reported earlier today that the victim had already died on Wednesday. He died today.
It took nearly five months, and almost two weeks following a brutal stabbing in the Bronx’s Norwood neighborhood earlier this month, but the 52nd Precinct has its first murder of 2012.
According to a high-ranking police official with the 52nd Precinct and Bronx News 12, the stabbing victim, Jorge Arango, died today from wounds suffered during an altercation on May 17 that resulted in his being stabbed some two dozen times.
Police arrested two individuals from the Knox-Gates neighborhood, Ramon Sanchez, 24, and Luis Davis, 28, and charged them with the stabbing of Arango on East Gun Hill Road at Jerome Avenue. The suspects were originally charged with assault in the first degree, but those charges will undoubtedly be upgraded to murder.
A source with knowledge of the investigation said detectives believe the suspects knew the victim intimately.
Video from a security camera installed by the Jerome-Gun Hill Business Improvement that sits above Caribe Restaurant recorded much of the incident.
Just before midnight, Arango, 22, a Norwood resident who lived on East Gun Hill Road, appears on camera standing in the Jerome Avenue crosswalk, wearing a red shirt. After the victim raises his hands to his sides, another man on the other side of the crosswalk, wearing jeans and a long-sleeved white shirt, runs toward him and the two begin fighting. That’s when another man, wearing shorts and a t-shirt, joins the fray and becomes entangled with Arango. While those two are tussling, the man with the white shirt produces a knife and starts stabbing the victim all over his body.
With the victim on the ground, the man in the white shirt walks back across Jerome and toward Knox Place, which is a block west of Jerome. Minutes later, the victim and his assailants are gone and police begin showing up.
Officers discovered Arango with multiple stab wounds, as many as two dozen, in his chest, arms and legs. He was transported to Jacobi Hospital in extremely critical condition.
Miraculously, the victim remained alive until today. The murder is the first of 2012 in 52nd Precinct, which includes the Norwood News’ primary coverage are: the neighborhoods of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights.
A passerby said he watched as police briefly questioned a woman who apparently came to the victim’s aid. “If you see a guy on the ground bleeding to death, and you stop and get blood all over you, you saw something,” the man said.
Another source said police followed a blood trail from the scene, broke down the door to a third-floor apartment and arrested at least one of the suspects at their Knox Avenue apartment.
“They took [the suspect] away in an ambulance,” he said.
Editor’s note: A version of this story appears in the May 31-June 13 print edition of the Norwood News.
