Community and family members at St. Patrick’s Home Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center recognized ten senior citizens who reached the age of 100 or more, a milestone also honored by President Barack Obama.
“Your generation has shown the courage to persevere to the moments of uncertainty and challenge,” the President and First Lady Michelle Obama statement read. “Your story is an important part of this American narrative.”
The statement opened the beginning of the centenarian celebration for the seniors at the Van Cortlandt senior center on June 16.
“It is somewhat hard to absorb people living to 100 years,” said Sr. Margaret Mary, an employee at the nursing home, during the ceremony.
“The ten women we are celebrating today were women of strength and courage,” she added.
Seniors were given gift bags and the home prepared a cake that read, “Happy Birthday Centennials.” After the ceremony, music was played in celebration of their birthdays.
