The NYPD said a 26-year-old woman has been arrested and charged following an investigation into the abandonment of a baby in the Longwood area of the South Bronx.

As reported, police said that on Sunday, Dec. 29, at around 6.05 a.m., a then unidentified person, who had earlier been captured on CCTV, placed a female infant wrapped in blankets in a tote bag in front of a home located at 1102 Rev James A Polite Avenue. They said the unidentified baby was transferred by EMS to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi in stable condition and remains in the care of hospital staff.

Eyewitness News reported that another person (a resident) passing by the location later heard the baby crying and called the owner of the house who was attending a service at a local mosque. The man returned immediately to his home, brought the baby inside and called for emergency services.

The outlet reported that the home is located next to a nonprofit organization that provides a range of family services, Family Services Network of New York Inc. Care Management & Coordination Program. Norwood News is attempting to reach the center for comment on whether there was anyone available and working at the center on the day the baby was abandoned and will share any updates we receive.
