The NYPD said a 26-year-old woman has been arrested and charged following an investigation into the abandonment of a baby in the Longwood area of the South Bronx.
As reported, police said that on Sunday, Dec. 29, at around 6.05 a.m., a then unidentified person, who had earlier been captured on CCTV, placed a female infant wrapped in blankets in a tote bag in front of a home located at 1102 Rev James A Polite Avenue. They said the unidentified baby was transferred by EMS to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi in stable condition and remains in the care of hospital staff.
Eyewitness News reported that another person (a resident) passing by the location later heard the baby crying and called the owner of the house who was attending a service at a local mosque. The man returned immediately to his home, brought the baby inside and called for emergency services.
The outlet reported that the home is located next to a nonprofit organization that provides a range of family services, Family Services Network of New York Inc. Care Management & Coordination Program. Norwood News is attempting to reach the center for comment on whether there was anyone available and working at the center on the day the baby was abandoned and will share any updates we receive.
Pursuant to an ongoing investigation, police said on Dec. 31, that Delfina Galvez of Rev. James A Polite Avenue, less than a block away from the site where the baby was abandoned, was arrested on Dec. 30 at 9.50 p.m. in the confines of the 46th Precinct in The Bronx. The 46th Precinct covers the neighborhoods of Fordham, University Heights, Morris Heights and Mount Hope.
They said Galvez has been charged with first degree reckless endangerment, abandonment of a child, and acting in a manner Injurous to a child. She is deemed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.
A few streets away from the location where the baby was discovered, NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) announced on Monday, Dec. 30, that the property owner of 896 East 167th Street, Goodman Realty Group, Corp., was fined $18,750 in penalties for violations recorded at the site.
