Police have arrested a man for a suspected fatal shooting that was the second such killing in Pelham Bay in less than three months.

On Monday, June 14, police announced the arrest of Luis Rivera, 18, of 2004 Ellis Avenue in Parkchester, who was charged with murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.

According to police officials, Rivera was charged in the fatal shooting of Nelson Caban, 24, of East 102nd Street, Manhattan. Caban was discovered inside his Honda Accord at 10:23 p.m. on Tuesday, March 30, on the southbound Bruckner Expressway between Exits 7-B and 8, located between Baisley Avenue and Pelham Bay Park.

Police say Caban was found “unconscious and unresponsive,” with gunshot wounds to his face and chest. He was rushed to Jacobi Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

At the time of Caban’s death, a police official said, “The victim was traveling southbound on the Bruckner Expressway when a blue sedan, being operated by an unknown individual, pulled alongside the passenger side of the victim’s vehicle and discharged a firearm.” The gunman fled the scene, continuing southbound on the Bruckner Expressway.

Caban’s killing came on the heels of an unrelated murder of Bronxite, Dane Salmon, 22, who was shot three times inside his vehicle on the Bruckner Expressway Service Road at Pelham Bay Park on the evening of February 6.

On March 12, the NYPD announced the arrest of Kelvin Ortiz, 35, of Avon, Ohio, who was charged with murder, manslaugher and criminal possession of a weapon.

A person arrested and accused of a crime is innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.
