LGBT Activists Discuss Solutions to Bronx Intolerance

Through a series of town hall meetings and other public activities, advocates and organizers are working to promote lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender tolerance in the Bronx, a borough that gained a bad reputation for its intolerance last fall when a group of young adults in Morris Heights were arrested for viciously beating and sodomizing two youths and another man because they suspected the victims were gay.

David Lehmann, a longtime worker in the public health field, heads the Bronx Smoke-Free Partnership, a program funded by the State Department of Health and Human Services based at 1826 Arthur Ave. The Partnership works with community groups and organizations throughout the Bronx to prevent young people from smoking and to shape public policy against the tobacco industry. Earlier this month, the Norwood News sat down with Lehmann to get his take on cigarettes and smoking in our community.

Mobile Pet Fixers, Coming to A Neighborhood Near You

There is something to be said for the power of puppy eyes. So proved Toby, a wolfhound mix, when he was adopted from a shelter by Dr. Andrew Kaplan, a practicing veterinarian in New York City. Although Toby was deemed "unadoptable" and "aggressive," Kaplan took him from the shelter just hours before he was scheduled to be put to death.

Toby soon became Kaplan's companion and his inspiration to battle pet overpopulation.
