As is customary each year during the festive season, members of the 52nd Precinct joined Santa Claus as they traveled aboard their usual Holiday Float through some of the neighborhoods that fall within the boundaries of the precinct i.e. Bedford Park, Fordham, Kingsbridge, Norwood, Bronx Park, and University Heights on Wednesday, Dec. 6.

The holiday float procession started at the precinct stationhouse at 3016 Webster Avenue in Norwood at 5 p.m., went up Webster Avenue as far as East 204th street, then turned onto East 204th Street and traveled as far as the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM), where Santa and the officers dropped off some candy for pediatric patients.

It then continued on its route along East Gun Hill Road and later turning down onto Jerome Avenue, still in Norwood, before heading towards Mosholu Parkway and Van Cortlandt Avenue in Bedford Park.

The decorated and colorfully lit float subsequently turned onto the Grand Concourse and into Kingsbridge Heights all the way to Fordham Road, then turned onto Webster Avenue, and then back to the stationhouse once again.

Santa and his team of helpers waved to residents, wished everyone happy holidays, and handed out candy to those they met along the route.

The event was coordinated by the 52nd Precinct’s Community Affairs team, including Police Officer Jessalyn Capo, and headed up by NYPD Officer Stephen Echevarria, who walked beside the float, greeting children and parents and handing out goodies along the route, as two other officers accompanied the float on horseback.

There weren’t too many kids or people out on the streets as it was a very cold night.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
