SalsaFest is returning to the Bronx after a successful debut last summer. Sponsored by Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and the Bronx Tourism Council, the 2nd Annual SalsaFest, which runs from Aug. 3 through Aug. 26, features free community events for music lovers in the borough.

“This is the borough that gave birth to what has become an international phenomenon, and it is only fitting that we celebrate ‘El Condado de la Salsa’ together with music, dancing, old-fashioned block parties and fun,” Diaz said.

The first SalsaFest event is a screening of the documentary “From Mambo to Hiop Hop: A South Bronx Taleon,” Friday, Aug. 3 at 7 p.m. The screening at the Pregones Theater on Walton Ave. will be followed by a panel discussion with some of the musicians from the film.

The Free Summer Music Series at Orchard Beach is another part of SalsaFest. The Music Series begins on Sunday, Aug. 12 at noon with Nelson Gonzalez and his All-Star Band. A famed guitarist, Gonzalez was a member of the Fania All-Stars.

The Morrison Avenue Festival, on Saturday, Aug. 18 is sure to be another SalsaFest highlight. Performers for the afternoon include Nino Segarra, the CopaCabana Band and Angelo y su Conjunto Modelo.

SalsaFest concludes on Sunday, Aug. 26 with Jazz Master Papo Vazquez with his Pirates and Troubadors. For more information on all these events and more, including block parties and concerts, visit the Bronx Tourism Council’s website.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts.
