The Daily News and New York Times are both reporting that incumbent Charlie Rangel’s 802-vote lead going into the day has grown to 945 votes. More counting coming tomorrow and, as we mentioned earlier today, the vote won’t be certified until at least next Wednesday, July 11. One other quick note, supplied to us by reader Jack: We reported earlier that Espaillat needed to file petition signatures by July 12 in order to get on the ballot for re-election to the state senate seat he currently occupies. (Although it should also be noted that Espaillat said repeatedly he wouldn’t run for re-election.) Well, Jack says Mark Levine, who is running to replace Espaillat and endorsed him in his bid to oust Rangel, could decide not to run and have Espaillat fill in for him. That decision wouldn’t have to be made for another two weeks after July 12. Whether Levine decides to step aside is another matter.
Update: A little clarification on Espaillat’s timeline for possibly getting back into the state senate race. Here are the important dates for designating petitions, which is required of candidates to get on the primary ballot:
June 5 First day for signing designating petitions.
July 9 – July 12 Dates for filing designating petitions.
July 16 Last day to authorize designations.
July 16 Last day to accept or decline a designation.
July 20 Last day to fill a vacancy after a declination.
July 24 Last day to file authorization of substitution.
According to these dates, Levine would have to drop out by July 16, the Monday after petitions are due. And then Levine’s Committee to Fill Vacancies would have until Friday, July 20, to choose Espaillat as a replacement candidate. Capital’s Azi Paybarah reported that Rangel’s attorney expects Espaillat to “magically” drop his vote challenge before July 12 so he can get on the ballot and try to keep his current job as a state senator. But he also pointed out the Levine Replacement Option for Espaillat, noting that Espaillat’s mom, Melba, is on Levine’s Committee to Fill Vacancies.
