A trio of brush fires at Williamsbridge Oval Park have been reported for the past week, sending fire crews to knock out the flames while worrying residents encircling the heavily used playground.
The fires happened on Nov. 24, 27 and 29 between 8 and 9:30 p.m., according to witnesses who took notice of the bright flames from their apartment windows. No injuries were reported.
“There’s someone going around and setting leaves on fire,” said Adi Talwar, a freelance photographer for the Norwood News who captured video of the fire. “I feel it’s such a drain on resources. Hats off to the Fire Department for putting this out.”
So far, the police have no information on what is causing the fires or whether it’s the work of an arsonist. Neighbors who’ve lived around the area say the park has never experienced a fire.
Facebook groups with interest to the park were abuzz with concerns about the fires over Thanksgiving weekend. On the Friends of Williamsbridge Oval Park Facebook page, residents had bounced ideas on how to better secure the park. One user proposed volunteers approved by police and park authorities could patrol the area.
Within the last few months, several quality-of-life issues have been cropping up at the park. A few weeks ago, a 17-year-old had been stabbed inside the park. In a separate incident, a fistfight broke out between a group of young people, prompting a poorly-attended meeting on the incident.
Parks Department has now upped patrols around the park via its Parks Enforcement Patrol authorities.
