Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson joined Ponce Bank to host her Annual Puerto Rican Heritage Month Celebration at Monroe College on Tuesday, Nov. 14. Held inside the college’s Mintz Auditorium, located at 2501 Jerome Avenue, Bronx, the event honored individuals who have contributed to the growth and promotion of their community and culture.
This year, the honorees included musician, composer and music store owner, Miguel Angel Amadeo, Detective of NYPD PSA7, Jessica Rivera; outreach coordinator for development & external affairs at Bronx Care Health Systems, Georgina DuBois, Administrative Judge Bronx Supreme Court-Civil Term, The Honorable Doris M. Gonzalez, and youth honoree was 19-year-old Julian Barreto, a senior at P176X. Jomil Luna, LGBTQIA+ health advocate, served as emcee for the night.
Puerto Rican Heritage Month has been officially celebrated in New York City since 1998, and acknowledges Puerto Rican contributions to the culture and prosperity of the city.

Assembly Member George Alvarez (A.D. 78), who was also in attendance on the night and who represents some or all of the neighborhoods of Bedford Park, Belmont, Fordham Manor, University Heights and Kingsbridge Heights, said of the event, “Honored to attend Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. He added, The Bronx is home to one of the largest Puerto Rican populations in the United States. Tonight, and every day, we celebrate the rich contributions of Puerto Ricans to the State of New York, the beautiful 78th Assembly District, the Bronx, and the City of New York!”
