Forget Cyber Monday, and think Giving Tuesday.
That’s what a Norwood school has hashed out as it helps with a charitable movement via social media.
PS 94 on Kings College is taking part in a national awareness campaign dubbed on Twitter #GivingTuesday, which launches on Dec. 2. It aims to convince charities to give back to local community schools in dire need of assistance.
The school’s partnered with Learning Leaders, a Manhattan-based nonprofit that trains volunteers to work one-on-one with students who need extra help. So far, the group works with 35 schools in the Bronx.
It’s a movement Diane Daprocida, the school’s principal, noted as a chance to “give back to our community.”
The group also encourages parents to take a proactive approach to immersing themselves in their child’s academics. The group hopes philanthropists nationwide would consider kicking up funds to the group.
Students at the community school have already posted brief videos on Facebook and Twitter. One of them includes Liju, an 8-year-old who needs Learning Leaders to “help with math and adding.” Sharelee, another student, relies on Learning Leaders to “help with writing big words.”
The program has also benefitted Maylin Montano, a parent of a student at P.S. 94 who serves as a volunteer. She boasted how the program helps “me to help my daughter at home with her homework.”
Learning Leaders has pledged $100 for any donation it receives, be it $1 or $1,000.
