Earlier this morning, we stopped by two polling sites in University Heights. The coordinators at PS 15 and PS 33 said that they are not sure what the voter turnout will be because of the new congressional redistricting lines and an unusually early primary date.

“There has been a breakdown in communications,” the poll site coordinator of PS 33 said. “The redistricting caused a lot of confusion.”

The poll site coordinator of PS 15 said that many people don’t know where they have been redistricted to and this can affect voter turnout.

By mid-morning, only 91 people had voted for a congressional candidate at both polling sites combined — 67 at PS 33 and 24  at PS 15. However, poll workers are expecting more people to vote around 6 p.m.

“We get a lot of votes in the evening,” said Poll Worker Rafio Balogun. “That’s when people get off of work.”

The majority of the few voters we spoke with earlier said that they were hoping that State Senator Adriano Espaillat, the only Latino candidate in the race, wins.

“I’m voting for Adriano Espaillat,” Marilyn Hernandez said right before casting her vote at PS 33. “He’s a Dominican and he’ll bring change to the congress.”
