The NYPD responded to a police radio report regarding a reported attempted arson incident in the Soundview section of the borough on Saturday morning, June 26, at around 11 a.m. NYPD officers were later seen parked outside 1750 E 172nd Street on Saturday morning as they investigated a report of gasoline poured on a door in the 6-story building in an apparent attempt to start a fire.
It was also reported that the Fire Marshall was called to the scene.
Norwood News recently reported on three recent arson incidents in the Bronx in recent weeks which involved a person apparently setting fire to the apartment doors of residential buildings in University Heights and Kingsbridge Heights, and the possibility of a fourth such incident also in University Heights.
We reached out to the NYPD following news of this latest report from Soundview to ascertain if police knew if this latest incident was related to the others. We were informed that based on the information available to date, the latest Soundview incident does not appear to be related to the others, and appears to have been the result of a dispute among people who knew each other, but the investigation is still ongoing.
According to FDNY’s Twitter Alert handle, there were no updates relating to the Soundview location.
We also followed up with FDNY to ask if they had any further information on the Soundview incident, given the apparent similarity with the other reported incidents. The FDNY later advised that in relation to the Soundview incident, they received a call at 10.58 on June 26 regarding a fire on the 2nd floor of the building located at 1750 E 172nd Street. They added, “No fire found; confirmed odor of gasoline.”
We asked FDNY officials if they could confirm if the incident constituted an attempted arson incident, as initially reported, and if they could say if it was possibly related to the other reported Bronx incidents, and they said they could not, adding, “We cannot confirm any information that NYPD has provided. We can only provide the general information on the requested incident.”
