A 33-year-old man has died following a fatal shooting in the Pelham Parkway section of The Bronx.
Police said that on Sunday, Feb. 23, at around 7.54 p.m., officers from the 49th Precinct responded to a 911 call regarding a person who had been shot in front of 2179 White Plains Road.
“Upon arrival, officers observed a 32-year-old male who sustained a gunshot wound to the back,” an NYPD spokesperson said. “He was transported by EMS to NYC Health+Hospitals/Jacobi in stable condition.”
Police said officers were later informed by hospital staff that a 33-year-old male who sustained a gunshot wound to the back at the same location and who was transported to NYC Health+Hospitals/Jacobi by private means, was later pronounced deceased.
Police said there are no arrests, and the investigation remains ongoing.
They said the deceased has been identified as Kemahni Smalls, 33, of Staten Island.
In response to this story, one resident alleges complaints had been made to the 49th Precinct about a U-Haul truck parked in front of Mystery, described by the resident as an unlicensed cannabis store, located at nearby 711 Lydig Avenue in the general vicinity of the shooting, which the resident said had been been padlocked by New York sheriffs.
We asked both the Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) and the NYPD for comment on this point and will share any updates we receive. According to OCM’s cannabis store locator tool, there is a pending application in place for a cannabis store at 711 Lydig Avenue. However, we are checking with OCM if this relates to the Mystery store owner or another business owner.
The same resident alleges the shooting took place at 796 Lydig Avenue, close to the address of this smoke shop store. However, images of the cordoned off crime scene from the Citizens’ App show it as being at 2179 White Plains Road.
Given there were two shootings, one fatal and one nonfatal, we asked the NPYD if it’s possible each took place at two different but nearby locations. We will share any updates we receive.
